06 Nov Want to save money in your business? Think about engine remapping
Does your business have a fleet of vans or cars?
From pizza delivery drivers to couriers, florists, or shops delivering items, many businesses use vehicles every day.
Fuel can be a significant cost on your bottom line.
Imagine how much your business could save if your fuel costs went down by 15%.
That’s what happened when BT took the decision to remap the engines in its fleet of vans in 2012.
Some businesses have chosen to limit throttle and revving in company vehicles to help achieve these kinds of savings.
It could reduce fuel costs in vans by between 10% and 20% and cars by around 6%.
How does an economy remap work?
The remap replaces the default software on the engine control unit.
For many private customers, this is done to increase performance and power. That kind of work increases the ‘map’ of the points recorded by the functions controlled by the unit.
For business customers where fuel economy is the overriding need, the same process if carried out but the new software settings limit some of the power in the vehicle to ensure your staff save as much fuel as possible.
In effect, it limits the ‘map’.
It inserts a limit on the revs per minute and the maximum speed of the vehicle.
This helps drivers to change gear at a the optimum rpm for fuel economy.
Along with the reduction in your fuel costs, this will also mean a reduction in the carbon footprint of your business and will stop your company vehicles being thrashed by drivers with a lead foot!
Here will also be savings on tyres and brake pads – they will have to be replaced less often if your drivers are limited in speed and torque.
It could also allow you to increase the intervals between services.
The cost savings could be hundreds or thousands of pounds every year, depending on the type and number of vehicles you use.
The vehicles will still benefit from improved acceleration, making overtaking easier.
What sort of businesses could benefit?
Any business which regularly uses vehicles for delivery or as part of its work. This could include:
- Supermarket delivery van fleets
- Courier companies
- Furniture removal companies
- Companies which use advertising sales reps
- Plumbers, builders, and electricians
- Driving instructors
- Taxi companies
- Mobile hairdressers
- Landscape gardeners
- Care companies
